It’s time to book a chimney sweep.

HETAS have seen reports of chimney fires starting to increase since the new year and with the return of freezing temperatures, we know many will be turning to their log burner for warmth. They are running their annual campaign urging everyone to Book a Sweep and avoid having a chimney fire.

Here are their top tips to help prevent a chimney fire:

• Book a Sweep– chimneys need to be swept on a regular basis and at least once a year, but ideally before and after each burning season depending on the type of fuel used.
• Use Ready to Burn fuels – Ready to Burn certified wood and manufactured solid fuels can be purchased.
• Use the stove in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Ensure a fireguard is in front of the fire at all times.
• Avoid slumbering a stove overnight – here’s a handy guide on slumbering and why it should be avoided.
• Extinguish the fire before going to ​bed or leaving the house.
• Do not be tempted to clean your chimney with a domestic vacuum cleaner, leave it to a proper chimney sweep.

“Without regular maintenance, solid fuel fires such as Log burners, open fires and stoves can have hidden dangers that are easily overlooked or forgotten about. A poorly maintained chimney can lead to a fire, which has the potential to spread to other areas, creating significant damage to your home. The levels of Carbon Monoxide could be increased, causing them to be released into your living space.”
